Innovative Transfer Matrix Approach for Simulating Pulse-Echo Interactions in Complex Interfaces

This research presents a theoretical model aimed at simulating signal propagation in a fluid-embedded medium with complex interfaces using ultrasonic pulse-echo techniques. The primary objective is to enhance our understanding of fluid properties and refine characterization methods across diverse scientific and technological domains. The study introduces a novel Transfer Matrix Method (TMM) designed for simulating signal propagation in multilayered structures. Leveraging a quadrupole formalism to represent each viscoelastic layer, the TMM enables efficient computational analysis of wave propagation and interaction within the medium. Specifically, the model addresses a two-layer structure comprising a fluid layer and two viscoelastic layers, providing a robust framework for analyzing intricate fluid-solid interfaces. To validate the efficacy of the proposed TMM model, time-domain simulations of backscattered signals were performed within the multilayer structure immersed in water. These simulations aimed to derive simulated ultrasonic parameters, including velocity and attenuation at a 5MHz center frequency. Comparative analysis against existing literature data and theoretical predictions confirms the accuracy and efficacy of the TMM model. The findings underscore the potential of the transfer matrix method in simulating fluid behavior within complex interfaces. This research opens avenues for advancing ultrasonic pulse-echo techniques in fluid characterization and analysis, with promising implications for fields such as material science, biological studies, and industrial diagnostics.
