Analysis of Shunt Reactor Switching at a 115 kV Substation and Its Effects on the Circuit Switcher

This paper contains the results of the shunt reactor switching study performed for a 25 MVAR shunt reactor in a 115kV Substation. The objective of this shunt reactor switching study was to determine the worst case transient recovery voltages (TRVs) imposed on the circuit switcher (CS) as well as the transient overvoltages (TOVs) imposed on the 25MVAR shunt reactor. After the simulation results indicated that TRVS may damage the CS, the authors recommended proper TRV mitigation for circuit switcher which also benefited the reactor from TOVs.
