Fault Type and Location Identifications of the Hybrid Utility Power and Renewable-Energy-Based Multi-Generation Systems using Nonintrusive Monitoring Techniques

In the face of hybrid utility power and renewable-energy-based multi-generation systems, if the traditional monitoring system, i.e., the high-speed global positioning system (GPS) combined with the phasor measurement unit (PMU), is adopted, PMUs and protection relays are installed at one or both ends of each transmission line and the internal sides of the renewable-energy-based multi-generation systems. These devices not only increase the complexity of data collection but also increase the cost of system construction. Generally, the monitoring system of renewable-energy generation systems mainly focuses on steady-state demand responses. Since the accuracy of steady-state faulty signatures is low and the calculation of fault data acquisition takes a long time, the analysis of internal and external faults of the systems is extended in response time and is difficult to identify. This paper proposes nonintrusive monitoring techniques, such as installing current sensors at the import power entry points to identify the fault types and locations. The results reveal that the proposed methods demonstrate high success rates of more than 96.2162% and 72.7564% for fault type and location identifications, respectively.
