Development of Distribution System Automation for Teaching and Research at ITC: Digital Tool and GUI in MATLAB and SCADA

This paper focuses on system reconfiguration-based distribution system automation with distributed generation (DG) using for loss reduction and voltage improvement the modified switch opening (MSO) method, and visual in Matlab GUI and SCADA software at the Electrical and Energy Engineering Department, ITC. Firstly, completed loops with sectionalizing switches and tie switches are defined for a proposed algorithm to reduce the possibilities of dependent switches in the optimization process. Secondly, the sequential switch opening algorithm is implemented by searching for which switches enable the minimum power losses. Then, GUI with Matlab for IEEE 69-bus Standard test is built to visualize the main indicators such as switch status, voltage profile, power losses, and topologies for users. Next, a first version of the emulated system and GUI with SCADA for the real medium voltage distribution system in Cambodia is also provided, is particularly for architecture and visualization. The simulation results provide the optimal solution with a fast executed time for network reconfiguration and automated visualization.
