Synchronization of Interregional Transmission System – Field Testing and PhasorPoint WAMS Application

Interconnected operation of the power system with enhanced cooperation gives power system operators more operational flexibility, improve overall reliability during contingencies and it can ease the integration of renewable integration. The focus of this paper is to describe specific approach followed to support synchronization of three small to medium size areas.. Multiple implementation projects related to system strengthening and augmentation, protection & control improvement, implementation of monitoring system was undertaken by the specialized agency to achieve synchronous operation of the three areas. Phasor Point Wide Area Monitoring system (WAMS) was also deployed to support synchronization and provide real time visibility of the system state. In this paper detail approach followed for the tuning of generator controls (turbine governor and power system stabilizer (PSS)) along with field test results and application of PhasorPoint wide area monitoring system (WAMS) in conducting synchronization trials is presented.
