Modeling and Simulation of a High Performance Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor for Biosensing Application

This study develops a simple hybrid structure of surface plasmon biosensor and employs a suitable numerical simulation approach to assess performance. Beginning from the fundamental structure, ZnO and WSe
2
layered-based structure is developed to get optimum performance. The optimum thickness of WSe
2
is determined to show the minimum reflection of the structure. Sensitivity, detection accuracy, and quality factor are theoretically and numerically evaluated for the proposed SPR biosensor. The numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed optimum structure enhanced sensitivity of $\mathbf{1.1}$ times higher compared to the basic Kretschmann configuration. The highest sensitivity of 99 deg/RIU is obtained with a moderate value of detection accuracy and quality factor. Since the $\mathbf{Z n O}$-Au-based proposed sensor architecture offers a significantly improved performance, it can be effectively used in various practical applications.
