Enhancing Dynamic Response and Zero Voltage Switching in Dual Active Bridge DC - DC Converters for Industrial Applications

This paper introduces a novel approach for incorporating a Dual Active Bridge (DAB) DC - to - DC converter into diverse industrial applications, aiming to attain a really effective DC - to - DC power conversion. Our study emphasizes the simulation and implementation of Sliding Mode Control (SMC) for the DAB DC - to - DC converter, with a focus on attaining zero voltage switching (ZVS) and enhancing dynamic response in voltage regulation. The DAB converter plays a crucial role in addressing environmental concerns and advocating the employing green energy sources, including wind and solar power. In contrast to conventional push-pull DC - to - DC converters, which are plagued by issues like hard switching, voltage spikes, and low efficiency, often necessitating the use of active clamp circuits, the DAB topology offers soft switching capabilities and galvanic isolation, resulting in significantly improved performance. Our paper thoroughly analyses the DAB DC - to - DC converter's behaviour under source disturbances using both open and closed-loop systems. To regulate the converter's output, we employ closed-loop control mechanisms using both Proportional-Integral (PI) and SMC controllers. We compare their performance using various voltage regulation indices, including steady - state error, rise, peak and settling times. The experimental findings from the SMC-controlled DAB DC - to - DC converter confirm the results obtained from simulations.
