A -79 dBm μ-Watt Wake-Up Receiver for Energy Efficient ISM and LoRa Communication

The landscape of the Internet of Things (IoT) and wireless sensor technologies is rapidly advancing, especially within industrial contexts. They present substantial potential for diverse applications, enabling precise and energy-efficient data acquisition. Despite those promising features, a key obstacle impedes the widespread integration of IoT and wireless sensors, particularly in battery-operated devices. The power consumption is primarily attributed to wireless Radio Frequency (RF) transceivers, where conventional approaches often rely on duty cycling to mitigate overall power usage, albeit at the cost of heightened latency. In acknowledgment of this challenge, this paper presents a low-power, high-sensitivity, and low-latency Wake-Up Radio (WUR) for ISM bands endowed with addressing capabilities crafted for ultra-low-power IoT devices. The proposed solution achieves a sensitivity of -79 dBm with power consumption down to 37 μW and a latency of 120 ms. Experimental evaluations conducted with commercial ISM transceivers, including Lora, underscore the energy-saving potential of the proposed WUR compared to conventional receivers.
