Safeway Companion: Smart Walking Stick with Sensory Based Safety Alert for Visually Impaired Individuals

People who are visually impaired deal with several difficulties in their daily lives. People, trained dogs, and technology devices serve as supportive networks for basic assistance for people with vision impairments. These individuals are frequently dependent on outside assistance. Also, travelling individually by them is one of their biggest obstacles. Hence to assist them to travel independently with safe way, the proposed project is developed. It would be a voice-activated “smart walking stick” device as a solution to this issue. This proposed model consists of two sections, one is associated with the person who is using and the other is associated with the bus. The user setup consists of an Arduino board, an ultrasonic sensor and voice assistive device. An ultrasonic sensor is employed to identify obstructions in front of them when they are walking. Ultrasonic sensors are used in obstacle detection and avoidance tasks to notify the user when impediments are approaching. The bus section consists of the route information and a transceiver for communication. The bus section and user section interfaces provide a proper voice-based guidance for a safe way travel without any external assistance. This voice assistant facilitates providing fall detection and avoidance as well as safe transit by them.
