Performance Comparison of 2 x1 Multiplexer Based High Performance Static and Dynamic Nanoscale Carry Select Adder for Future DSP Applications

This study compares the performance of the 2 x 1 multiplexer-based 4-bit static and dynamic carry select adders. The design for this circuit is based on 16nm technology and features a 0.7V power supply. A step size of 10 is employed to evaluate the circuit's performance in the operational temperature range of 27 to 107 degrees Celsius. When juxtaposed with a static adder, the dynamic adder circuit showcases a notable 61.58% increase in speed at 27°C and a substantial 60.5% enhancement at 107°C. From transitioning from 27°C to 107°C, the static adder showcases a decrease in speed of 32.9%, and the dynamic adder shows a decrease of 36.6% at the same temperature shift. When comparing the two circuits at 0.7V at 27°C, the dynamic adder shows a 1.29% increase in power consumption over the static adder circuit; however, at 107°C, this increases to 3.88%, caused by the keeper transistor size. Nevertheless, the dynamic adder exhibits a great decrease in power consumption at higher supply voltages. As the temperature escalates from 27°C to 107°C, the power consumption of the static carry select adder diminishes by 10.60%, while that of the dynamic adder experiences a reduction of 12.94 %. Hence, the dynamic carry select adder outperforms its static counterpart with fewer transistors, leading to a related power consumption, improved area efficiency, higher speed, and lower short circuit power.
