Second‐Order RLC Step and Complete Response

Summary

Based on the behaviors of capacitors and inductors, in response to step inputs of voltage or current, this chapter intuitively describes the expected step response of series and parallel RLC circuits. It shows an example of a series RLC step response simulation and presents a detailed analyses of RLC step response, including solutions to the homogeneous and non‐differential equations of RLC step response. Step response is a zero‐state response (ZSR) which does not consider any initial conditions or stored energy in the circuit. Natural response is a zero‐input response (ZIR), which considers only initial conditions like capacitor voltage and inductor current. The compete response of a circuit considers both ZSR and ZIR. The chapter discusses the RLC complete response with an example of RLC complete response simulation.
