Ferranti Effect on a pi model of an Overhead Transmission Line - A detailed Analysis

This paper deals with the design and findings of a novel laboratory model developed to enable hands-on evaluation of the Ferranti Effect on transmission lines. The Ferranti effect is defined as a steady voltage at the open end of an uncompensated transmission line being larger than the voltage at the sending end. The salient feature of this work is its empirical basis, achieved by experimentation on hardware with a power generator and an advanced double bus bar system. The experimental analysis aims at voltage regulation and the observation of voltage profiles on transmission lines. The experiment further identifies the capacitive and inductive properties of the line as pivotal factors in the manifestation of the Ferranti Effect, particularly under conditions of light load or open circuits at the receiving end. This study enhances the practical understanding of transmission line phenomena, offering valuable insights for power engineering education and highlighting the importance of laboratory prototype in validating theoretical concepts.
