A Cavity Backed Probe Fed MIMO Antenna for 5G Applications

A broadband MIMO antenna which consists four basic antenna elements is proposed for 5G base station applications. The operation band of the antenna is 3 GHz to 5 GHz, which covers n77 and n79 radio bands. The antenna is designed based on cavity-backed probe antenna. The channel capacity and the envelope correlation coefficients of the proposed antenna is simulated and evaluated. The simulation shows that the efficiency of the proposed antenna is higher than 64%, and the channel capacity of the antenna is approximately 17.5 bps/Hz, only 3.5 bps/Hz lower than the ideal 4 × 4 MIMO antenna, demonstrating that it is suitable to be employed in 5G base station applications.
