A Novel Reconfigurable Absorber/Radiator Based on SEMC Antenna

A reconfigurable absorber/radiator with p-i-n diodes is proposed in this paper based on SEMC (Switchable Electric/Magnetic Conductor) antenna. The lossy layer, achieved by employing the periodic array loaded with lumped resistors, is positioned above the SEMC antenna. An air space is served as the intermediate layer. As the p-i-n diodes are activated, the SEMC antenna is regarded as a conductive metal plate. Therefore, the upper loss layer, air space and SEMC antenna form an analog circuit absorber with a 10 dB radar cross section reduction bandwidth ranging from 3.42 GHz to 7.43 GHz. Upon deactivation of the p-i-n diodes, the SEMC antenna can be utilized as a low-profile antenna and it radiates electromagnetic waves traverse through the loss layer to free space.
