Magnetoelectric layers improve spatial variability in wireless power transfer

Wireless charging is typically based on two well-aligned coils, the emitter and the receiver coil. Distributed coil systems with arbitrarily placed receiving coils suffer from power nulls and need complex control. We demonstrate that it is possible to actively guide and distribute the magnetic field in wireless power transfer (WPT) systems using magnetoelectric (ME) composite materials. Thereby, we enable WPT to also operate with non-aligned coils and enhance positioning freedom. Our research begins with a proof of concept at low frequency, followed by an experimental verification with a WTP system at a resonance frequency of 540 kHz. Finally, we conducted an extensive analysis of our fluxguide by means of simulations.
