Development of Omnidirectional Wireless Power Transfer based on Axial Magnetic Quadrupole Mode of Dielectric Resonator

An efficient omnidirectional wireless power transfer (WPT) of portable devices is in high demand. It can find a wide application to charge portable devices regarding their orientation and location with respect to a WPT system transmitter. To reach this goal one needs to design a transmitter with an omnidirectional magnetic field distribution. In this paper, we propose and develop an omnidirectional magnetic resonant WPT system based on a transmitter realized as a dielectric hollow cylinder resonator with ultra-high permittivity and low loss, operating on axial magnetic quadrupole mode. The results of numerical investigations and proof-of-the-concept experiments are demonstrated and discussed. The omnidirectional WPT system efficiency of 90 % is achieved at the operational frequency of 154 MHz for the transfer distance of 3 cm, regardless of several receivers angular positions.
