Impact of Misalignments on the Thermal Behaviour of an IPT Coupler

This paper compares the thermal behaviour of an inductive power transfer coupler with different compensation topologies at misaligned positions. Three commonly used compensation topologies (SS, LCC, and LCCS) are designed for a set of planar coils. Coupled electro-thermal simulations are run on the different configurations using finite element analysis (FEA) software ANSYS Maxwell to predict their thermal behaviour. LCCS compensated system is shown to have the best thermal performance with a maximum temperature of 67 °C at a misalignment of 120mm when compared to the SS: 82.3℃, and LCC: 70.56 ℃, compensated systems at a misalignment of 120mm.
