Measuring the Polarization State of Light - a Student Lab Exercise

We design a laboratory exercise for the students of Photonics in the 4th year of their undergraduate studies. The goal is to teach them the concepts of the Stokes parameters that characterize the polarization state of the partially polarized light and the way we can determine them experimentally using a simple polarimeter composed of a quarter waveplate, a linear polarizer and a detector of light.
