Multimodal Analysis of Tissue Dynamics - Spotlight on Perfusion and Temperature

This paper presents the design and implementation of a multimodal system for the noninvasive assessment of tissue perfusion. The system comprises two measurement modalities: photoplethysmography imaging (PPGI) and infrared thermography imaging (IRTI). Both methods provide crucial information about the tissue's condition; one in terms of blood perfusion and the other in terms of the skin tissue temperature. The dynamics of changes in these parameters induced by external stimuli could offer more insights into comprehending the interdependence of physiological responses. In the scope of this paper, an experiment involving the application of a vasodilating cream to the skin was conducted. Subsequently, we utilized the proposed measurement setup to monitor changes in tissue parameters. The results of the study demonstrate an increase in temperature and perfusion of the tissue to which the vasodilator cream was applied. The data also suggest different dynamics of the sensed parameters.
