Topology and Main System Components in Second-Life Battery Energy Storage Systems

Second-Life Battery Energy Storage Systems (SLBESS) represent a promising direction for optimizing costs in modern smart grids. Although they can help reduce costs, they are highly sensitive components, which places high demands on their design and management. The article focuses on describing the topology and key components for SLBESS. The use of second-life batteries brings economic benefits, but it is necessary to adapt the design of the Battery Energy Storage System. Two product lines of SLBESS with different capacities of 90kW and 150kW are introduced, integrated into standard 20ft shipping containers. The article emphasizes the optimal integration of the entire system to effectively utilize batteries with a second life. In conclusion, measurements of the developed prototype on the AC terminals in grid supply mode are presented.
