Usage of Virtual Instrumentation in Teaching Automotive Buses

This paper presents the usage of virtual instrumentation as a tool for teaching of automotive bus – CAN BUS. There are multiple applications of virtual instrumentation that leverage the automobile bus to facilitate communication comprehension. The initial method of employing virtual instrumentation involves visualizing the instrument cluster, which is managed by the student's microprocessor-controlled development kit. The demonstrational panel, which includes an accelerator pedal, turbocharger, instrument cluster, and development kit, is also visualized. Using LabVIEW and CAN BUS interfaces, genuine instrument clusters from Skoda and VW automobiles are controlled through the second application of virtual instrumentation. It is simpler for pupils to comprehend the structure of communication through automotive buses of the real vehicle when the instrument cluster is controlled and visualized using the same messages as in the real vehicle.
