Economic Optimization of Utility Integrated PV-Battery System Considering Grid Decarbonization

The intermittency of solar energy sources is one of the biggest barriers that can be mitigated through the use of energy storage systems (ESS). This paper presents an energy management system (EMS) that allows the use of solar energy resources in an economical, efficient and environmentally friendly way. The presented algorithm controls the ESS by minimizing the cost of energy purchased from the grid and carbon dioxide emitted by the utility. The study is carried out using MatLab®, which is implemented in a microgrid with solar generation and a battery storage system where the energy management algorithm is executed and tested. These experiments prove that the proposed algorithm is a reliable and effective option that allows the implementation of renewable energies in microgrids.
