State Estimator Based Bad Topology Detection

The traditional State Estimator (SE) based bad data detection does not discriminate between bad measurements and bad topology. Enhanced methodology, in which the bad topology is automatically corrected prior to the correction of bad analog measurements is presented. The topology errors are detected by measuring the changes to the quality of the SE solution around the breaker operation. These changes determine the acceptability of status changes. Unacceptable topology changes are automatically reversed, and SE is rerun. Consequently, the operator needs less time to identify and correct bad topology in the network. Also, operator tools for monitoring SE solution quality are introduced. The enhanced SE solution not only improves the situational awareness of the grid operators, but it also enhances the solution quality of the electricity markets.
