Project Considerations from Extruded Conversion of 115kV Pipe-Type Transmission Cable Circuits

A utility replaced three 115kV pipe-type cable circuits with a retrofit of extruded cables and avoided the significant impacts of constructing entirely new circuits in a sensitive area where new construction would have been challenging. The utility selected a cable design that also increased capacity on the circuits while developing some “lessons learned” from the conversion process. This paper summarizes the characteristics of the project, design elements and alternatives, and challenges that were faced at various points in the project.
