Common Electrical Controls and Microgrids

Renewable generation, particularly solar, is becoming more economical and feasible. With the addition of solar power, many facilities are considering creation of a microgrid. This paper discusses considerations regarding electrical controls that relate to development of a microgrid. There are many control elements to consider. Some existing controls can be applied very easily to a microgrid, while others may need to be upgraded or replaced. This paper gives the reader an overview of common control elements in commercial and industrial power distribution systems and discusses their applicability to use in a microgrid. The expense and risk of all new controls are not necessarily required; many controls may be usable as is. When equipment is upgraded or replaced, the control options discussed in this paper may provide useful guidance when working toward building a microgrid.
