Five Challenges for Developing E-nose Standards for Annoyance and Health Complaints from Environmental Odors

Multiple international standards organizations have developed standards for monitoring exposures to toxic chemicals and substances. The odor monitoring community has made contributions with various levels of success. The IEEE Standards Association, in collaboration with the IEEE Sensors Council and the International Society for Olfaction and Chemical Sensing, has established working groups focusing on outdoor malodor monitoring via e-nose instruments. This paper summarizes five important challenges that these e-nose instruments should solve. Interested participants are welcome to join the working groups and make their opinions known.
