Long-Range Planning in the IEEE Control Systems Society [President’s Message]

Most of the work involved with running the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) is of the day-to-day variety in that locations must be decided for our upcoming conferences, associate editors or technical committee chairs must be appointed, and page budgets must be set for our journals. But what about the more forward-looking work? Who do we want to be as a technical society? How do we ensure that we contribute to the big, defining questions of our time, like climate change, health equity, or societal implications of artificial intelligence? How do we ensure that our membership is properly served and becomes more diverse, as a diverse set of voices is undoubtedly needed to stay relevant? These are all questions that require us to not only have a plan for where we should be going, but also for how to get there.
