Wind Turbines Wake Models Comparison

This paper discusses the main wind turbines wake models used in wind energy calculation software to evaluate the electrical power generation of wind turbines within a wind farm, considering aerodynamic shading losses. The paper focuses on two empirical wake models for wind turbines, which are used in the most popular wind energy computer-aided design (CAD) software products on the international market: N.O. Jensen's model, which is the base model in the PARK module of the WindPRO software bundle, and I. Katić's model, which is the only model in the WAsP program. The paper presents a detailed analysis of these models, taking into account the parameters used in them. Through a comparative calculation of both models using the wind farm in the village of Ust-Kamchatsk as an example, the study reveals that I. Katić's model demonstrates higher accuracy. Conversely, utilizing N.O. Jensen's model in wind energy calculations results in an underestimation of predicted wind turbine output, exceeding 80% at certain wind directions.
