Study of Brushless Generator with Multi-Pole Rotor for Direct-Drive Wind Turbines

The efficiency of converting mechanical rotation into electricity determines the prospects for using wind turbines as the main source of energy. To increase reliability during long-term operation of wind turbines, it is important to abandon mechanical gearbox and rotate generator rotor directly from the propeller. For a conventional generator design, this leads to an excessive increase in a rotor diameter, because frequency of an output voltage depends on the number of rotor's poles, and it becomes excessive. The authors propose a generator design suitable for operation in direct-drive wind turbines. This article is devoted to the study of this design on a resistive and nonlinear load (three-phase bridge).
