Project Z – System Requirements for Pilot-Scale Net Zero-Carbon Emissions Electricity Generation

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is conducting an internally funded research project, hereafter referred to as "Project Z", to develop the system requirements and a preliminary system design for transitioning SwRI from fossil fuel-powered electricity generation to renewable energy plus storage with net-zero carbon emissions. The goal of the project is to use the SwRI campus for pilot-scale demonstrations of different combinations of electrical power and energy storage technologies to provide a continuous source of electrical power to support operations and future research and development. This paper describes the results of the definition phase and plans for the next phases of the project [1].
