A Novel Automatic Sea Clutter Suppression method Based on Relative Entropy of Radar Plots

Marine navigation radars are widely used in the field of ship navigation. Navigation radars monitor sea surface targets in real time, enabling ship navigation functions while also providing collision avoidance capabilities to ensure the safety of ship navigation. However, its detection performance is often affected by sea clutter. Sea clutter can cause a decrease in signal-to-noise ratio, severely affecting the radar's target detection performance. Therefore, it is necessary to suppress sea clutter, especially for detecting slow and small targets. However, existing sea clutter suppression methods have limited capabilities in suppressing sea clutter due to the non-stationarity of the sea surface environment, radar working parameters, and the low observability of sea surface targets. Existing algorithms do not perform ideally in improving target detection performance and have poor generalization in complex marine environments. Based on information theory and characteristics of sea clutter, this paper proposes an automatic sea clutter suppression method based on relative entropy of radar plot. The analysis results show that the proposed method can effectively suppress sea clutter and ensure the detection performance of targets in the sea clutter.
