Numerical Investigation on the Charging Process of Phase Change Materials (PCM) in Thermal Energy Storage Systems

This study introduces an advanced simulation model that highlights the importance of using phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal energy storage in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. The model specifically examines the dynamics of heat transfer oil (HTO), more specifically therminol VP-l, as it moves through a coil within a PCM storage medium using RT28. These choices represent a strategic selection of materials aimed at maximizing energy storage and transmission in situations with varying demand. The simulation accurately computes various crucial parameters that are essential for assessing the efficiency of thermal storage systems based on PCMs. These encompass meticulous energy balances, offering a comprehensive perspective on energy preservation and effectiveness within the system. The model also evaluates the thermal efficiency, measuring the effectiveness of therminol VP-1 in transferring heat to the PCM RT28. Furthermore, the model excels at measuring ambient losses, a crucial factor in assessing the overall efficiency of the system. It accurately calculates the temperature at the outlet on the hot side, which is a critical measure of the efficiency of heat transfer in the system under different operating conditions. Moreover, the simulation provides a comprehensive examination of the storage temperature in the PCM, which is crucial for optimizing the medium's ability to retain thermal energy. This simulation model is an essential tool for improving our comprehension of PCM-based energy storage systems. It specifically emphasizes the significance of therminol VP-l and PCM RT28 in enhancing the design and efficiency of sustainable thermal energy solutions.
