Comparative Analysis of SMC and PI Controls in DFIG Wind Systems.

This research examines two control methods for wind turbine systems employing Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIG) in the renewable energy sector. The study compares the nonlinear Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Controller (STSMC) and linear proportional-integral (PI) controller within the paradigm of Indirect Flux-Oriented Control (IFOC) for DFIGs. The study emphasizes the efficacy of the controller in managing active and reactive power, showcasing its operational robustness, efficiency, and stability. The MATLAB/Simulink simulations exhibit the superior performance of STSMC in terms of responsiveness, stability, and accuracy, especially during fluctuations in wind speed and variations in machine parameters. The study also incorporates “Control Precision Metrics” and “Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)” to further analyze the performance of the STSMC. The findings indicate that the STSMC significantly reduces power output disparities and THD levels, revealing the limitations of linear control strategies in wind energy systems. This research advocates for the adoption of STSMC and promotes sustainable and efficient wind energy production.
