Design, Optimization and Performance analysis of Two In-Wheel Motors Drive Electric Vehicles

In nearly decades, direct drive permanent magnet synchronous machines have garnered substantial interest within the realm of electric vehicles (EV s). This work deals with the design optimization and performance comparison of two in-wheel motors (IWMs). The motors topologies considered in this study are as follows: radial flux surface mounted permanent magnets with stator teeth of equal and unequal sizes. The design of these two configurations is carried out by giving the magnetic and electric modeling. The optimization process is conducted with respect to three objective functions: maximizing efficiency, minimizing weight, and minimizing torque ripple. The optimization results demonstrated that the configuration with unequal stator teeth outperforms the other configuration in terms of efficiency and torque ripple. The optimization results are further investigated using the finite element method (FEM). The analysis results showed that the configuration with unequal stator teeth exhibits lower levels of magnetic saturation, losses and torque ripple compared to the machine with equal stator teeth.
