Current State and Future Trends of Active Management in Distribution Networks

The advancement of distribution technologies and the growing usage of distributed generation sources, along with the introduction of electric vehicles, are causing a shift in distribution networks. Instead of being passive, they are becoming more active. The integration of renewable distributed generation in the network alters the flow of power. The inclusion of electric vehicles further adds complexity to the management of distribution networks. Consequently, distribution network operators need to adopt strategies to actively control, monitor, protect, and communicate within the network. This article provides a brief summary of recent progress in this field and explores upcoming technologies and future trends that will facilitate the active management of distribution networks.
