First Results of an USRP-Based Multi-Function Real-Time Radar

This paper presents the first results of a real-time USRP-based multi-function radio frequency system (MFRFS). The advantage of the USRP-based systems is the universal hardware which allows multi-function radars to be realised on a single platform without the need to develop hardware for each subsystem. The MFRFS presented in this paper includes four different subsystems. The first subsystem is FMiCW (frequency-modulated interrupted continuous wave) radar with instantaneous bandwidth of 10 MHz. The other three subsystems consisting of classification, jamming and false target generation are operating together adding electronic countermeasures (EC) to the MFRFS. Thus, the output of the classification subsystem is used as an input to the jamming and the false target generator to provide the corresponding EC response. Hence, MFRFS is capable of target detection in real-time as well as implementation of electronic reconnaissance, electromagnetic jamming and deception simultaneously. The electromagnetic deception is realised by generating a false target with predefined range and frequency shift, masking the behavior and the number of the real targets.
