Model Predictive Control of an NPC Rectifier for V2G and G2V Applications in DC Fast Charger

This paper introduces a novel Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme for a three-phase Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) rectifier, designed for versatile applications in both vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and grid-to-vehicle (G2V) modes within DC fast charging systems. The core of this approach harnesses the converter's discrete characteristics to strategically select switching states that minimize a predefined cost function. The MPC algorithm facilitates seamless bidirectional power flow, enabling instantaneous mode transitions and ensuring rapid dynamic responses. To validate the proposed control strategy, extensive simulations under complex scenarios were conducted using MATLAB/Simulink. A comparison with a Proportional-Integral (PI) control method demonstrates the MPC's superior performance in terms of precision and dynamic response. The outcomes of these simulations corroborate the converter's ability to maintain sinusoidal grid current, achieve acceptable total harmonic distortion (THD) according to IEEE 519–2014 standard, unity power factor, high efficiency, and exhibit minimal voltage ripples on the DC side.
