Characterization of Metameterial Using k-Band Rectangular Waveguide for 5G Applications

This paper presents a method developed for extracting electromagnetic properties of meta-materials. A thin slab of fictive homogeneous meta-material the complex permittivity
$\varepsilon= -1.2-0.007j$
and the complex permeability
$\mu=-3.5-0.003j$
with thickness 0,79 mm loaded in a rectangular waveguide WR42, is simulated with HFSS in order to get the scattering parameters
$\mathrm{S}_{\text{ij}}$
at the
$5\mathrm{G}$
band (18,00-26,50 GHz). However, To extract the electromagnetic properties of meta-material (MM) from the Sij-parameters, the derivation of refractive index
$n$
and impedance
$z$
as functions of these parameters is computed using transmission line theory. To solve the branching problem that occurs to extract a unique solution, this method allows the refractive index and impedance to be determined by the requirements of a passive medium. This method has been validated by determining, in the 5G band, the electromagnetic properties of the MM mentioned above.
