Extraction of solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) from airborne hyperspectral data

A variety of environmental factors influence the productivity of Kiwifruit crops. Remote sensing-based solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) could be used as a potential trait to understand the photosynthetic performance of heterogeneous kiwifruit canopies. SIF extraction from hyperspectral data involves convolving complex vegetation structures, dealing with weak signals, and accounting for variations in illumination. The present study used the 3D RTM (radiative transfer model) LESS (large-scale remote sensing data and image simulation framework) for simulating SIF in the kiwifruit canopy. 3D kiwifruit canopies were constructed based on high-density aerial LiDAR information and spectral properties of kiwifruit canopies. The results show SIF retrieval is more accurate when coupled with the 3D RTM.
