Effect of Functionally Graded Bulb Type Spacer in Three Phase Gas Insulated Busduct

Electrical substations must function safely, efficiently, and quickly following damage in any environment. Recent GIB spacer failures are caused by manufacturing and switching difficulties such as delamination, protrusion, depression, void, and others. These defects degrade the insulator’s surface, de-energizing the gas-insulated busduct and costing a lot. In this work without introducing any kind of abnormalities on Spacer, Triple Junction electric field stress is analyzed using Epoxy Bulb type spacer and also with Functionally Graded Material (FGM) Bulb type spacer for a three-phase GIB. Metal inserts at the enclosure end minimize stress. Functionally graded materials are spatially distributed with fillers and doped with different permittivity values to provide homogeneous electric field stress. Simulation insulators are created for different voltages and FGM grades. The Metal Insert reduces grading’s influence on electric field stress in the FGM Bulb type insulator. Results are examined and analyzed to show how effectively the recommended insulator works over the Epoxy Bulb type insulator.
