Eye Blink-based Morse Code Communication Tool for ALS Patient

The development of the Internet of Things(IoT) has boosted the inclusion and productivity of persons with impairments in modern society. This article discusses the challenges faced by individuals with speech and movement problems caused by motor neuron illnesses such as ALS and PLS, and the importance of technologies for augmented and alternative communication (AAC) in improving their quality of life. With 44% of India’s 2.68 billion specially challenged population having hearing, speech, or visual impairments, the need for cost-efficient and accessible AAC devices is significant. The article proposes a software solution that monitors eye blinks using OpenCV and Dlib libraries in Python, converting the blinking pattern into Morse code for universal communication. The software offers a simple and affordable alternative to existing AAC devices, enabling individuals with disabilities to interact with their environment and reduce their dependence on others.
