Application of a New Designed ROADM to Improve the Performance of Elastic Optical Network

The rapid growth of emerging technologies has caused the architecture of optical networks to shift from the conventionally fixed networks to elastic optical networks (EON) that are flexible. This results from the emergence of multicarriers that are spectrally efficient and have a higher order modulation as well as bandwidth. In addition to that, the development of optical switches that are wavelength selective has further enhanced the the performance of these networks in terms of bit rate, center frequency spacing, modulation format, and optical reach. Bandwidth variable transceivers have been made possible by colorless flexible-grid reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADM) as well as options of various types of optical sources. With these operators can offer a range of service categories as well as an improvement in the efficiency of the network. Careful consideration is necessary when implementing the EON network, specifically when it comes to the ROADM to attain optimum performance. An affordable ROADM structure is proposed in this study, that delivered an efficient outcome with blocking probability which was lower than than 10-4. This newly designed ROADM was then assigned at a 1 Tb/s EON. With this, it can be concluded that the proposed system in this research was able to accommodate 20% higher traffic demand compared to a low-rate wavelength approach.
