Three-Phase Induction Motor Protection System

A three-phase induction motor is commonly used in heavy industry and is considered high-voltage equipment. The motor is inverse to the generator principle as the equipment generally convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. The induction motor construction consists of two parts known as the stator and rotor respectively. The stator is the stationary and the rotor is the rotating part of the induction motor. The induction motor is supplied with a three-phase supply and involves mechanical movement, which can lead to common faults such as turn-to-turn faults and a deficit of insulation, to name a few. Therefore, it is important to monitor and protect the induction motor to extend the health of the motor and avoid unnecessary breakdown. Therefore, this project is focusing on a single phasing fault of the induction motor as the main project work. The project is to develop a simple protection circuit comprised of a rectifier, voltage regulator, and comparator as the main components. A simple circuit simulation is carried out to study the developed protection circuit. The data from the simulation is compared with a simple analytical method to aid the actual development of the protection circuit.
