Multiple DGs and DSTATCOMs Allocation in Radial Distribution Network using Hybrid BVSI-CPVI MOPSO

Distribution networks are vital elements responsible in ensuring an efficient and reliable of electrical power delivered to the end users. These networks are usually a passive and radial configuration, resulting in power flowing in one direction that has limitations in flexibility and reliability. This can be mitigated by introducing Distributed Generation (DG) and Distribution Static Compensation (DSTATCOM) into the network. This integration enhances the system’s overall performance, especially in minimizing the power losses and improving the bus voltage profiles. By optimally locating and sizing both DG and DSTATCOM, this benefit can be further enhanced. Hence, this study proposes a hybrid-based technique to solve the optimal allocation of multiple DGs and DSTATCOMs optimization problem. The potential buses for DGs are initially obtained using line voltage stability index (BVSI) and then, the most appropriate location and sizing of DGs are examined using the proposed Combine Power and Voltage Index (CPVI). In the next stage, the optimal location and sizing of DSTATCOMs are employed using Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) for reducing both real power loss and bus voltage deviation. Validation of results is performed in various cases on a standard IEEE 33 bus radial distribution system and comparative studies are conducted to examine the effectiveness and viability of the proposed technique against other techniques.
