Wireless Potentiostat for Electrochemical Measurement and Analysis

A potentiostat is a voltage source device containing electronic circuits for the control and measurement in response to changes in the resistance across a circuit that is used to measure electrochemical activity. Industrial laboratory application such measurement of arsenic levels in river (water quality industry), Vitamin C concentration in juices (food industry), Acetaminophen concentrations in medications (healthcare industry, and detection of analytes (biochemical industry) are the major advantage of potentiostat. However, the price of each potentiostat device can range from a few thousand to tens of thousands make it less accessible for education line in electrochemistry research. Due to that, an affordable portable potentiostat device is essential to develop. This project demonstrates the development of a Wireless Potentiostat for Electrochemical Measurement (WPEM) an integrated electronic reader using ESP8266 microcontroller. The read data from the potentiostat will then be transferred to web-based application wirelessly. The WPEM device was fabricated in dual layer printed circuit board (PCB) as the mainboard to mount the microcontroller, potentio circuit and the stepdown DC-to-DC. This WPEM device has been assessed by performing cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments for the simple redox reaction and obtained reliable results thus could be useful in educational labs especially for undergraduate level teaching. In light of the integration of wireless components into this potentiostat, user-supplied experimental parameters and real-time visualization of the results can be readily seen and processed (analyzed) using any enabled Wi-Fi devices. In conclusion, this WPEM makes electrochemical measurement more affordable and portable.
