The Effect of Rotor Core Diameter on 0.5 HP 3 Phase Induction Motor Performance

This paper begins an examination of the suitable diameter of the rotor core that must be selected in order to achieve a stable and good flux density distribution and hence reduce power losses in a 0.5 Hp induction motor. The main problem with induction motor performance is that it depends on the amount of losses and the dispersion of magnetic flux. Core losses account for 20–25% and copper losses for 15–30% of total losses in electrical machinery. A significant percentage of the losses in electrical devices comes from losses in the iron core. Analysis of the flux density distribution and efficiency dependent on the size of the rotor core diameter is supported by theoretical calculation and MATLAB simulation. According to the simulation results, a rotor core diameter of 2.5306 inches, or 79.9%, has the best efficiency. In conclusion, the power input and power losses affect an induction motor's efficiency. The flux distribution in the induction motor can also be impacted by power losses, particularly at the rotor core part.
