IoT-based Wheelchair Fall Detector for Elderly Care

One of the causes of injuries is that the elderly and those with movement disabilities is falling. Medical assistants must be given right away to limit the possibility the faller will suffer serious injuries. This project is carried out to identify severity of falling in elderly people using wheelchair by notification to caretaker the location and level of impact from falling. An IoT-based wheelchair fall detector system is proposed. The system includes a gyroscope, GPS module, FSR pressure sensor, and microcontroller for fall detection. The gyroscope is used to determine the wheelchair's orientation, while the FSR pressure sensor, attached to the seat pad, is used to identify user pressure. Together, they detect fall events, which improve fall detection precision as well as severity of fall impact. In the event of fall occurring, a GPS module will pinpoint the location of the wheelchair. And send the data through GSM module to caretaker. The Internet of Things (IoT) system is used to notify caretaker the emergencies and needs of assistance. Results shows that the level of impact during falling can be detected either low, medium, or high as well as the location of the elderly during falling. Emergency alerts were sent to the caretaker either by phone or message. This system also offers a prompt response and has lower deployment costs.
