Digital Thread Architecture: Coupling Requirements and 3-D CAD Models in an Iterative Closed Design Loop

Contemporized design includes excessive modeling, computation, and software applications. In a fusion power plant (FPP) development, simulation and computer-assisted design modeling, including finite element analysis, computational dynamics analysis, and physics-based modeling, are fundamental tools deployed in the design activities. The tools have enhanced the engineering design process (EDP). However, the digital processes are ad hoc and not formalized. This article proposes a digital development process, building up a network of interdependent digital deliverables, each depending on one another, which is classified as the digital thread architecture (DTA). The DTA, in simple terms, may refer to the digitization and traceability of a product or system from concept to retirement. The DTA is modeled to comprise two elements—digital surrogate (DS) and system environ-analytics (SEAs). Using a parametric model, the DS allows a digitized system representation to be extrapolated as a 3-D CAD clone. The SEA allows for analyzing the DS clones within a particular condition or external environment in a digitized format. The DTA allows for the integration of CAD and simulation tools, linking the data and exploiting the capabilities of semantic technologies in the nuclear field. In the case study, Simulia Isight is used to demonstrate linking data. The Aras PLM software was used to integrate the implemented tools and for traceability.
