Exploring the Mila Landslide: Integrating Radar and Optical Remote Sensing for Enhanced Geohazard Assessment

This conference paper presents a comprehensive remote sensing study aimed at investigating the Mila landslide triggered by a moderate earthquake on August 7, 2020. Leveraging Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 radar and optical imagery, Coherence Change Detection and Change Detection techniques were applied to delineate the landslide area. Discrepancies between radar and optical-derived results highlighted the strengths and limitations of each modality in accurately delineating the affected area.Additionally, displacement estimation was performed using Sentinel-1 radar data through Offset Tracking and compared to estimations derived from Sentinel-2 and AlSat-2A optical imagery processed with MPIC-OPT and Cosi-Corr software. Surpassing accuracy observed in optical imagery-based displacement estimations emphasized the finer spatial resolution’s significance in capturing detailed surface alterations.Further analyses involving ALOS DSM data revealed lineaments coinciding with landslide boundaries, suggesting potential subsurface fault structures manifesting as surface lineaments. These findings contribute to understanding lithological influences in landslide predisposition.Collectively, the integration of diverse remote sensing techniques offers multifaceted insights into the Mila landslide, emphasizing the importance of combining radar and optical data for comprehensive assessments. The outcomes underscore remote sensing's pivotal role in unraveling complex geohazards, thereby enhancing our understanding and management strategies in landslide-prone areas.
