Remote Sensing for Swelling Clay

This research focuses on the application of advanced remote sensing methods to detect and monitor swelling clay phenomena in the Mzila region, using data from various imaging sources. The initial phase involves utilizing the Spectral Angle Mapper technique on hyperspectral data from the Hyperion image to detect and identify clay minerals, particularly montmorillonite, in a specific bentonite mine.Subsequently, a time series of SAR images was processed using the SBAS technique to observe displacements over time. The obtained results visualized a series of dis-placements corresponding to the identified clay swelling phenomenon. To strengthen this conclusion, a comparative analysis was conducted by linking displacement data with precipitation and soil moisture data. This comparison confirmed that the observed displacements are directly related to variations in these environmental factors.This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the combined use of hyperspectral and radar remote sensing techniques for monitoring and understanding clay swelling phenomena, providing valuable insights for the management and prevention of risks associated with such terrain in the Mzila region.
